Staffordshire Economic Bulletins
As a response to the need for up to date information on the local economy, the Research Unit at Staffordshire County Council is publishing a monthly economic bulletin for the partners, considering issues such as unemployment, national economic conditions and indicators, local job gains and losses and the state of the housing market.
The bulletins are produced on a monthly basis, shortly after the publication of claimant unemployment data, to support the need for a timely evidence base during the recession.

Local Economic Assessment for Staffordshire - Update April 2010
The Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009 places a new duty on all county councils and unitary district councils in England to prepare an assessment of the economic conditions of their area. Staffordshire County Council has been developing its capacity to prepare a local economic assessment (LEA) for the past 2 years, including an informal LEA published in January 2009.
The LEA will provide a key evidence base to inform local and regional strategies including the sustainable community strategy, local area agreement and the forthcoming regional strategy for the West Midlands. It will also inform other local strategies such as local development frameworks, local transport plans, housing strategies, the work and skills plan and the commissioning role for 16 to 19 learning.
Early 2010, has seen the preparation of a range of thematic issues papers investigating different areas of the economy and these will form the basis of an initial consultation process during May and June 2010. Alongside the preparation of these papers, one to one meetings have been held with a wide range of local stakeholders to identify the key issues at a local level, and among different sectors of the economy. A 12 week consultation will be held on the full draft of the LEA in the summer and early autumn of 2010, with the LEA being completed before the end of 2010.
